DESIGN SPOTLIGHT CARPET, WYNN ESPLANADE "Jacques Garcia was a designer I wanted to use—the Parisian designer, one of the greatest of all European designers. Steve had gone with me to Paris, we met him, and we commissioned him to do two restaurants and the casino.… The only thing we kept from Jacques's casino is the carpet. Coincidentally, the carpet that I designed for the casino was inspired by the same period and the same kind of artfulness that Jacques's were. We were working 5,000 miles apart. Jacques's pattern is what we have in the pathways and through the Esplanade, and my pattern is under all the table games and slots. They married perfectly. They look like they were created by the same person." RED LACQUER COLUMNS WITH GOLD LEAVES, ENCORE LOBBY BAR "The tower columns are really big on the ground floor. They get smaller as they go up, but at the bottom they have to hold the most weight and stress, so they get very large. We wanted to feature them because we couldn't make them disappear, so they're covered with high-gloss, red, powder-coated panels. It's almost an automo- tive finish. We actually found the golden leaves on them in the hard- ware industry. They're meant to be drawer pulls; they're gilded bronze, and we spread them around because the center of the lobby bar features a statue of Daphne, who is the daughter of the river goddess. She is metamorphosing into a laurel tree in the middle of the restaurant; she's a golden girl turning into a golden laurel tree. She's doing that to avoid Apollo—long story—and her leaves are blown off, and we're seeing her golden leaves on the red columns." 70 WYNN
