Wynn president Marilyn Spiegel spotlights three moments that highlight one haute color. DISCOVERIES R ed was chosen as the theme for this issue of Wynn not only because of its myriad asso- ciations—it symbolizes power, romance, and in the Chinese culture, luck—but also, as luck would have it, the color happens to be Marilyn Spiegel's favorite. "Red has everything in the world going for it," says the Wynn and Encore president. "I think it's a color of action and a very assertive color. And people who wear red tend to be very action-oriented. I've loved it for as long as I can remember." With that in mind, we asked Spiegel to highlight three rosy moments that might cause guests to stop and take notice. BAR AT ENCORE "A great example of so many design details throughout Wynn and Encore is that the original inspiration might be quite small, but that idea is then increased to much larger, more resort-friendly proportions," Spiegel notes. That was the case with the flowers that accent Encore's Southside Bar, a trio inspired by a diamond brooch, measuring two inches by two inches, with the finished result spanning almost four feet in diameter. Crafted in Los Angeles by Moth Design by a team of five women over the course of several weeks, each flower was made from resin, and then each Swarovski crystal was selected and applied by hand, in various shades of red and orange to give depth to each piece. The flowers were mounted on panels against a deep-blue background, an effect that Spiegel says "makes them really pop, and which I think makes them more beautiful. It's just the right touch of sparkle for the space." 1. SWAROVSKI-CRYSTAL FLOWERS, SOUTHSIDE 3. ENCORE BEACH CLUB Red is not a primary color at the Encore Beach Club, although it can be spotted as an accent throughout the space. Orange is the shade that dominates EBC, and Spiegel finds its uplifting quality to be quite appealing. "I think the vibrancy of orange both at Encore Beach Club and at Lakeside has been great," she says. "It conveys an energy, yet it's used in uniquely different ways between the two spaces. I love the orange at the club, especially against white and our beautiful blue desert skies." Not unlike so many spaces throughout Wynn resorts, Encore Beach Club was conceived by Roger Thomas, who in his three-decade-plus career with Steve Wynn has excelled in such thoughtful decisions. Notes Spiegel, "His designs never fail to make me smile." 52 WYNN ESPLANADE Wynn's Matisse-inspired floral mosaics rank high among the resort's most popular design moments—guests often can be spotted taking photos among them—while you'll find butterflies adorning the floors of Encore. Between the two, as you traverse the Encore Esplanade, also take a moment to notice a series of floral wall mosaics flanking the Home Store. "I think the colors are so beautiful, and the flowers depicted so lush; there are a lot of 'wow' moments at Wynn, but these are a bit more of a subtle wow that feels elegant and luxurious," Spiegel says. Conceptualized by Roger Thomas, executive vice president of Wynn Design & Development, the mosaics prove to be a perfect accent for the Esplanade. Adds Spiegel, "Now that we are redesigning the other side of that hallway near XS, Roger plans to duplicate these mosaics on that side as well, bringing not only a lovely sense of balance to the Esplanade, but just a little bit more magic as well." 2.
