above: The color red continues as a narrative device throughout the show, establishing the moment when the main character leaves reality and enters the dream world. "At the beginning, the dreamer and her young man enter and perform a pas de deux as she wears a simple, white dress," says Gray. "When she flies away with the dream man—we call him the Dark Prince—and enters the imaginary world, she wears a red dress. This is the adventure for her. The red dress symbolizes a bit of a libertine nature and the wild side." Todaro agrees. The deep, rich color, she says, signifies the young woman "letting go of her inhibitions." left: In "Tango," synchronized swimmers perform a dance upside down and underwater, their legs and feet, clad in dainty red heels, the only part visible to the audience. "Even the soles are red leather; they look great when they're up, out of the water," says Todaro. "Red is a hot color."
