STEVE WYNN Mere yards from the bustle of the Wynn casino, you'll discover the posh tranquility of the Villa Atrium. "Perhaps you'll stop and think, Someone designed that for my enjoyment and my discovery. That, I can tell you, is absolutely true. That remains top of mind every day." pirate ship at Treasure Island, and ultimately the dancing fountains at Bellagio. But with Wynn, this time it would be different. "I wanted to create an air of mystery, a sense of wonderment about what might be going on inside," he remembers. "I had also realized I was giving away the spectacle to anyone who wanted to walk by, when I should be creating it purely for the enjoyment of those who chose to venture inside. It became far more personal, more intimate, and by extension, more magical." It's a Thursday night in Las Vegas, and the temperatures have cooled to create one of those balmy desert evenings tailor-made for outdoor dining, with the dusky, purple-tinged sky giving way to a flood of stars and the hint of a cool breeze. On such a night you'll find Wynn at Bartolotta, seated at one of those highly coveted cabana tables, or on the patio at SW Steakhouse, or at the adjacent Lakeside—favorite spots that effortlessly fuse those elements of luxury and artful elegance that imbue every conversation between Wynn and Thomas. It's a serene vista punctuated every 30 minutes by the Lake of Dreams's multimedia show, which dazzles with colorful video projections of performances such as flamenco dancers in a "Fiesta Fatale" sequence, as well as quieter moments, including a pair of 30-foot-tall, hibiscuslike flowers that sway in time to Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43." 30 Wynn will shortly head into one of these spots for dinner, and alongside his guests he will enjoy the serenity of the star-filled night, mixed with those brief forays into spectacle created by music, lights, and visuals that combine to captivate the eye. Indeed, Wynn likely will be the first to smile when a 30-foot frog sporting a cowboy hat rises from behind the waterfall, his puppet mouth lip-synching to Garth Brooks's "Friends In Low Places." Of the eight sequences that comprise the nightly Lake of Dreams show, it's one that never fails to delight. "Unforgettable moments can mean many things to many people," Wynn says. "To us, to the people who put their passion into this place every day, it can mean anything from building a room that's well-appointed, with a bed that gives you the best sleep you've ever had, to making sure you've enjoyed an incredible dinner that comes with wonderful, attentive service. And then you look up, and you see something that resonates with you; it makes you smile, and perhaps you'll stop and think, Someone designed that for my enjoyment and my discovery. That, I can tell you, is absolutely true. That remains top of mind every day." And just a few yards away, as spectators gather around a balcony, raising their cameras and smartphones, Thomas's parasols continue their slow, stately dance. ■ WYNN 024-026_W_FOB_SteveWynn_Fall13.indd 30 8/9/13 11:21 AM
