STEVE WYNN Among the resort's most widely discussed spaces for its visual impact, The Spa at Encore, conceived by Las Vegasbased interior designer Todd-Avery Lenahan, blends sumptuous appointments with a sense of luxe escapism. "[Roger has] got a great sense of my thoughts on a project, and then he takes those ideas and starts to explode them in his own imagination. Out of that, magic happens." Thomas has formed quite the visionary kinship with the man whose name resides at the top of the building, a partnership that's realized both the resplendent—the Matisse-inspired mosaic floors that wend their way through those flower-filled atriums spring to mind—and the refined, such as the mother-of-pearl tones and elegant moldings that comprise the cool sophistication of Wynn's Tower Suites Lobby. Others have lent their creative talents to Wynn and Encore interiors over the years—Todd-Avery Lenahan, who designed the ultra-posh Spa at Encore, is a key example— though one gets the sense that Wynn and Thomas are never happier than when they're enmeshed in the creative process, when the flurry of ideas is at its height, and the look of a resort has begun to gel and blossom in a fashion that spurs confident thoughts that the bar on quality—on the luxury resort experience as a whole—will be raised once again. Wynn doesn't dispute this idea when the 26 suggestion is posed to him; instead, he grins with the satisfaction of a man who is wholly content in his work. "This is the fun part for Roger and me," he says. "He's got a great sense of my thoughts on a project, and then he takes those ideas and starts to explode them in his own imagination. Out of that, magic happens." While the sizzling Las Vegas summer was beginning to take hold, Wynn's latest project wasn't one he was quite ready to publicly discuss, though by late July he would begin to dole out a few details, tidbits meant to tease and tantalize about what the future might bring: Wynn Cotai, his fifth resort and his third in Macau, would by the end of July officially be christened the Wynn Palace, a 2,000room hotel that Wynn announced would open just prior to the Chinese New Year in February 2016. Before he ever broke ground on the property Wynn said his intent for Cotai was simply to build "the best hotel on the planet." Between his WYNN 024-026_W_FOB_SteveWynn_Fall13.indd 26 8/9/13 11:20 AM
