...WITHOUT WHOM THIS ISSUE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE NOVEMBER 2013 Thomas Connors Credentials: Thomas Connors writes regularly about the arts, design, and dining. In addition to his work for Michigan Avenue, he has penned pieces for a variety of magazines, including Town & Country, Interior Design, and Modern. Behind the story: "Chicago has always struck me as a very self-conscious city, and it's always interesting to discover how others see us. I can't wait to see Sarah Morris's cinematic take ['Beyond Big Shoulders,' page 76] on this town." Favorite Chicago spot: "Crossing the Michigan Avenue bridge, with the river below, the lake in the distance, and Tribune Tower, the Wrigley Building, and the InterContinental rising up ahead." Paige Wiser Credentials: A native Chicagoan, Sister Rosemary Connelly is a member of the Religious Sisters of Mercy and was appointed administrator of Misericordia ["Sisterly Love" page 68] in 1969. Favorite Chicago spot: "Misericordia, of course! We provide a continuum of care for 600 children and adults with developmental disabilities, and we invite all to share in the spirit of Misericordia by taking a tour, volunteering, enjoying a meal in our Greenhouse Inn, or sampling some of the bakery items created by our residents in the Hearts & Flour Bakery." Her inspiration: "The power of the presence of our children and adults, all developmentally disabled and some physically challenged as well. Because most of them come from homes that love and treasure them and they continue to have this same loving environment at Misericordia, they are happy persons who teach us many lessons of how to live life on God's terms." 28 Jeff Crawford Credentials: Photographer Jeff Crawford was born in Chicago, grew up in Las Vegas, and is the founder of Seattle-based Big Top Studio. Crawford has photographed for clients like Nintendo and Microsoft and is Niche Media's first staff photographer. Behind the story: "Both of them ['Patrick & Patrick,' page 112] were very friendly and fun to be around, laughing and joking on set the whole time. They knew exactly how to rib each other like a couple of school-aged friends." Favorite Chicago spot: "The John Hancock Center and the crisscrossing lines that rise along its sides." His inspiration: "I started shooting so I could meet girls, but my appreciation for the art developed as I grew in my career." PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIANA HEARD (CRAWFORD) Sister Rosemary Connelly Credentials: In addition to 17 years at Chicago Sun-Times, Paige Wiser has been a movie critic on Windy City Live, a regular on WGN radio, and a writer for Parenting, Notre Dame magazine, and more. Behind the story: "Researching how affluent Chicagoans give during the holidays ['Give Till It Hurts,' page 152] was fascinating and surprising. I truly believe Oprah has an agenda in giving to the Smithsonian." Favorite Chicago spot: "Any bar on Hubbard Street." Her inspiration: "I hope my writing makes people smile. I am also motivated by money; obviously, tips are accepted." MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM 028_MA_FOB_Contribs_Nov13.indd 28 10/21/13 6:35 PM
