T he Guide EAT, DRINK, SHOP, AND UNWIND Country Time BRITISH HERITAGE GALLOPS INTO THE GOLD COAST WITH THE NEW BARBOUR FLAGSHIP ON WALTON STREET. BY LINDSEY MURPHY S ince 1894, J. Barbour & Sons has been renowned for its stylishly durable waxed cotton jackets for men and women, and now the English countryside brand has brought its genteel fashions to downtown Chicago with a two-story, 7,000-square-foot space in the heart of the Gold Coast. The lower floor beckons shoppers with two collections: Barbour's motorcycle segment with heavier bomber jackets—like the belted Baker waxed jacket, inspired by Steve McQueen—and the heritage collection featuring slimmer jackets for everyday wear, from cozy quilted to traditional tweed styles. Upstairs, classic and lifestyle collections incorporate more outerwear, comfy earth-toned shirts and sweaters, a full equestrian line, and childrenswear. Photographs from the Barbour family, an antique sewing machine, and a horse saddle accent the various collections, and that's intentional, says North American General Manager Tom Hooven. "We're inviting customers into the Barbour heritage." 54 E. Walton St., 312-944-0250; barbour.com/us MA MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM 145_MA_Guide_Opener_Nov13.indd 145 145 10/21/13 5:09 PM
