Boston Calendar's Jim Martinho and Sean O'Connor, photographed here at the Zakim bridge, bring the city's hottest tickets—like annual music mega-festival Boston Calling ( ABOVE AND LEFT)—to the people. In 1773, the Sons of Liberty set the precedent for odd and curious occurrences on our New England turf. Now, three native Bostonians plan to expose their city to that living legacy by creating, chronicling, and curating wildly awesome, and often quirky, events. Sean O'Connor, Saurav Bhattacharyya, and Jim Martinho make up The Boston Calendar, a website and newsletter showcasing off-the-beaten-path parties, lectures, concerts—you name it. There's the "How to Lose your Boston Accent" class in Back Bay, a Bavarian brass band parade on Spectacle Island, and a parking space pop-up party in Cambridge. "I started [Boston Calendar] because I had had enough of hearing friends complain that there weren't cool things to do here," says O'Connor, a former filmmaker, whose Craigslist job listing landed him writer Jim Martinho, the voice behind the site's snappy personality. The duo, along with engineer Bhattacharyya, plan to expand the business across five cities, incorporating event production and using the site as a kind of Airbnb for venues.
