BY SAMANTHA REICHSTEIN What: Three days of sure-to-be engaging and innovative discus- sions at the Texas Tribune Festival, hosted by the nonprofit website for state politics and policy news and its co-founder, CEO Evan Smith. Held at the University of Texas September 23-25, the festival will feature nearly 180 speakers ready to dive into immigration, criminal justice, healthcare, higher educa- tion, transportation, and government transparency. Who: Speakers include Lance Armstrong, former Mexican president Vicente Fox, and former US Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. The Washington Post's Marty Baron of Spotlight fame will chat with Smith at a pre-festival dinner at Franklin Barbecue on September 22, and Maureen Dowd of The New York Times will talk presiden- tial politics on September 24 at the inaugural TribFeast gala. What to expect: "A free-flowing, rich-in-content, and extremely collaborative experience," says TribFest veteran Renu Khator, president of the University of Houston and speaker on the collegiate athletics panel this year. "The beauty of the weekend is its relevancy," she adds. A highlight this year is a Sunday media panel dissecting the presidential elec- tion—which at that point will be just six weeks out—with speakers from The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Time, CNN, and MSNBC. texastribune.org/festival . Lance Armstrong, one of many speakers at this year's Texas Tribune Festival, will talk about the continued fight against cancer. SCENE EVENT 48 AUSTINWAY.COM
