...WITHOUT WHOM THIS ISSUE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE OCTOBER 2013 Catherine De Orio Credentials: Recovering attorney De Orio is the new host of the Emmy-winning show Check, Please! In addition to dishing on all things culinary, De Orio has also contributed to Vegas, Wynn, The Huffington Post, and other publications. Behind the story: "Hanging out at Rare Tea Cellar with Rod Markus and Adam Seger ['Liquid Courage,' page 86] was a complete sensory explosion—tea leaves being aged in añejo tequila barrels, halogen beam heaters, and every exotic and gourmet ingredient you could dream up." Favorite Chicago spot: "The Green Mill has great jazz good whiskey, and is filled with Chicago history." Pat McGann Credentials: A Chicago native, stand-up comedian McGann is the host and creator of WTTW's The Chicago Stand-Up Project and was the first comedian to perform on Windy City Live. Behind the story: "I was inspired to write 'Gold Coasting' ['Lipstick on a Parking Meter,' page 152] by the absurdity of a city selling all of its assets. I always try to find a way to laugh at bad situations. It's how I cope." Favorite Chicago spot: "Zanies in Old Town has charm, a ton of energy, and is historic in terms of stand-up comedy. Most nights the room literally shakes with laughter. It's not a bad place to go to work." Bill Kurtis Credentials: Kurtis worked for CBS for 40 years, from Los Angeles to New York, but he has always called Chicago home. Along the way, he founded Kurtis Productions, where credits include major contributions to A&E such as Cold Case Files, Investigative Reports, Investigating History, and The New Explorers on PBS. Currently, Kurtis Productions produces American Greed for CNBC. Behind the story: "A lot of people are surprised to learn that I was in the Marine Corps ['In the Trenches,' page 64]. But I was born in the Corps. As they say, 'Once a Marine, always a Marine.'" Favorite Chicago spot: "Millennium Park. It's inspired more positive change in Chicago than any period since the Columbian Exposition in 1893." 28 Anjali Pinto Credentials: Food-enthusiast-turned-food- photographer Pinto's true passion remains in telling stories. She frequently photographs for Lettuce Entertain You, and her work has also appeared in Rolling Stone, Vogue, Esquire, and more. Behind the story: "Executive Chef Anthony Martin ['Holding Tru,' page 80] cares about his presentation as well as the plates. He's fashion-conscious, which is always fun to document. During this shoot he taught me about French cuffs and patterned socks." Inspiration: "My horrible memory. If I were not constantly documenting my life, I'd be sure to forget it."
