SPIRIT OF GENEROSITY Paris Casmiro with the Extraordinary Rendition Band. Charity Regist er OPPORTUNITIES TO GIVE. continued from page 60 After completing the Early Intervention Program, children can enter public schools or stay at the Center, where students attend the day school for five hours a day, five days a week. The Center functions much like a regular school, with art projects, field trips, and monthly themed parades in the hallways, but with the addition of intensive therapy. "One of the reasons the Center has a great reputation and is so effective with students is because of our staff, equipment, and clinics," says Hodgson. "We have such a strong physical therapy program because we have access to a wide variety of cutting-edge equipment. The right supports at the right time can make all the difference in the outcome of a child's therapy." Hodgson knows firsthand that while the students at the Center gain invaluable assistance, they also impart priceless lessons to the volunteers and staff. "When I first started working at the Center, there was a little boy, Noah, who had been diagnosed with a degenerative disorder but was still running up and down the hallways at that point. One day three years later, after he had become unable to run, walk, or sit up, I sat next to him in his classroom to tell him a story. I told him how the night before, at a fundraiser, his father had stood up before everyone and said how proud he was of him. Noah turned his head and faintly smiled at me, and I realized that no matter the physical state and abilities of the children here, they all still have the same wants and needs." The third annual Fishing for a Cause fundraiser will be held June 21–22, followed by a tented awards dinner at Pope's Island Marina. For information on tickets, visit fishing4acause.org.
