PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL ROMAN/SIMPLYSHOWBIZ.COM (MCCARTHY) FROM THE PRESIDENT & PUBLISHER Friends forever: Me and the guys on our annual fishing trip to Cape Cod. With our lovely September cover star and hometown girl Jenny McCarthy, enjoying our party at Untitled in River North. In the coming-of-age classic Stand By Me, Richard Dreyfuss says, "I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12.... Does anyone?" I often recall those famous lines when I go on my annual guys' trip to Cape Cod, a tradition my buddies and I have had for more than 20 years. There's nothing like that hysterical, uncontrollable laughter you have with men who knew you as a kid, way before business success, marriage, and—yes—baldness! I didn't know back then that those friendships, built on honesty, integrity, and loyalty, would be a foundation for my success at this magazine and its ability to attract world-class actors, performing artists, and athletes to grace our covers. I couldn't be happier and more grateful to have Luke Donald appear- ing on the cover of Michigan Avenue's annual Men's Issue. When Chicago wine industry titans Bill and John Terlato introduced us several years ago, I knew Luke was one of the world's greatest professional golfers, but I didn't know until recently that his talents extended to art, wine- making, and philanthropy. Not surprisingly, he and his wife, Diane, are wonderful benefactors for great causes. One of the charities closest to their hearts is The First Tee, an organization that encourages youth to lead healthy lifestyles, learn life skills, and develop charac- ter through the great game of golf. @danuslan and on Facebook at facebook.com/danieluslan. Follow me on Twitter at ABOVE: At the ever- dapper Dwyane Wade's kickoff dinner for Wade's World Weekend at the InterContinental. LEFT: My best friend in the world, my wife, Sharon. Luke is kind and approachable, and his willingness to help others is obvious. He's a guy you'd want to call your friend. Perhaps one day I'll be able to convince him to join the gang to play a few rounds at the Cape. Until that time comes, I'd better suggest to the guys that playing at least 18 holes should become part of our annual male bonding tradition. Fore! DAN USLAN 20 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM
