FROM THE EDITOR Tea at the Drake with the lovely Laurie Davis (TOP ROW, SECOND FROM LEFT) and other fab friends. I wasn't bad—I had a district ranking, w Snapshot of yours truly by Maria Ponce, star photographer of our men's feature. As a teenager, I lived to play tennis. on a couple rounds at the Illinois state tournament, and on my better days struck fear into the hearts of high school players in two or three counties. It was my passion. I spent every free hour on the court, by myself or with partners, serving buckets of tennis balls across the net, picking them up, and serving them back again. I knew I'd never turn pro, but that didn't matter. More than anything, I loved the game and I loved to compete. Meeting our cover subject Luke Donald, I was struck by how he gives off that same vibe. There's no aura of celebrity, no diva quality, just an athlete with an obvious passion for a game that he loves just as much now as he did while growing up in the UK. The difference is that Donald, a Chicago resident since his Northwestern University playing days, isn't just another Chicago duffer—he's one of the best in the world. That's why Luke is the perfect cover subject for our Men's Issue, in which we celebrate some of the Chicago gents who are making exciting things happen in this great city and beyond. From alt-country musician Robbie Fulks to Chicago at @JP_Anderson and at michiganavemag.com. Follow me on Twitter International Film Festival founder ABOVE: With Bill Terlato and cover star Luke Donald at Carlucci. LEFT: With Dan Uslan at Michigan Avenue's September cover party. Michael Kutza to hotshot designers Tim Tierney and Michael Morarity, the guys profiled on these pages are true standouts—not just because they're successful, but because each pursues his craft with the same passion with which Luke Donald pursues birdies (and with which, once upon a time, I pursued the perfect topspin lob). It just goes to show: Whether athlete or designer, musician or mixologist, Chicago men are made of impressive stuff. J.P. ANDERSON 18 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM
