PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF DIPTYQUE The new, updated 34 Collection from Diptyque includes, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Reflet Photophore ($160, fits all 34 Collection pillar candles); Essences Incensees (Rose de Mai) Eau de Parfum ($180 for 120 ml.); and, for the first time, textiles in the form of pillows ($90), totes ($58), and pouches ($45), each of which come in one of three prints: Legende (teal), Paladin (red), or Pretorien (purple). A FLAME REKINDLED AS AUSTIN WELCOMES ITS FIRST DIPTYQUE BOUTIQUE, THE LUXURY CANDLE COMPANY INTRODUCES ITS TEXTILE COLLECTION. BY CHRISTINA CLEMENTE Diptyque is synonymous with luxury candles, but the perfum- ery's origins are rooted in textiles. Its first shop, which opened in Paris at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain more than 50 years ago, was a bazaar that showcased the fabric designs and travel finds of founders Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Gautrot, and Yves Coueslant. In honor of its origins, Diptyque has added fabric accessories to the latest edition of its 34 Collection, first introduced in 2014, which Myriam Badault, the brand's creative director, calls "a red line throughout years." The most unexpected element of the collection are its pillows, totes, and pouches. "Fabrics are really part of the brand aesthetic," says Badault, who enlisted illustrator Charlotte Gastaut to create fresh takes on the original Légende, Prétorien, and Paladin patterns. According to Badault, the pieces are a tribute to the 1960s, "with a hint of modernity." The collection also includes fragrances, a candle holder that boasts a customized mirror, and a glass candle holder that comes with three paper shades. The updated 34 Collection comes just as Austin get its first Diptyque boutique at Domain Northside. Says Donna DiDonato, the brand's US managing director: "Austin is a thriving, creative city, an eclectic place that truly embraces the craftsmanship and innovation that diptyque stands for."
