ART FULL Three Cans by Christopher Schulz, 2012. Metallica M etal makes a social statement in sculptor and painter Christopher Schulz's latest collection of work. The California native, who is presenting his first solo exhibition at DTR Modern Galleries this winter, has long worked with stainless steel and bronze, and recently started sculpting in aluminum. He created Three Cans ( PICTURED) after featuring images of trailers in his paintings for several years, "to symbolize the attraction to simple and minimal living," he says. "I noticed that the simplicity of a lifestyle like this attracts a group of people who ultimately steer away from solitude by gathering together, much like the mind-set of an artist." Schulz has long gone back and forth between sculpting and painting, 78 and finds the two to be helpful in communicating different types of ideas. Instead of committing to just one medium, he allows himself to grow through the exploration of a range of materials. His work is also inspired by the continually changing landscape of the art world. "Something that was once mainly enjoyed by a select group is now something that can be accessible to a broader section of people," says Schulz. "I am drawn toward the connection with icons because they are so accessible to us all. No one has to reach to understand or to feel a connection when viewing my work— it just is what it is."
