"I worked with somebody who set up a docent program where we'd take preschoolers and show them butterflies, but now they really have the science," she says of the organization, which has educated more than 40,000 children throughout its history via after-school, summer camp, and internship programs to help foster future generations of conservation leaders. Lake Forest Open Lands Association also boasts memberships in Chicago Wilderness and Land Trust Alliance, and helped establish the Lake Forest Collaborative for Environmental Leadership to unite the city, public school districts, and Lake Forest —JAMEE FIELD College on sustainability and stewardship efforts. The remnant lands are especially valuable resources to scientists, ornithologists, and students from the Chicago Botanic Garden, DePaul University, and Northwestern University who study everything from water quality and soil chemistry to bird migration. "We still have a feeling of openness right downtown in Lake Forest, which is wonderful," she says. "The suburbs that I knew when I was growing up are now like living downtown: It's just building after building after building. One day you wake up, and suddenly you can't see the sun anymore. You realize all these invasive things are coming around, and you realize that neighborhoods are shrinking, shrinking, shrinking.
