TALENT PATROL The intersection of Oak and Rush is one of Amy Creyer's favorite spots to capture street style. Ravenswood resident, "I love pieces that have an interesting design, or the silhouette is unique, or the way the designer used lines is innovative." Why athletic? "I need to feel like I can run after somebody in my clothing because I'm always thinking, What if I saw somebody I wanted to photograph?" Creyer has reason to need lightning-fast moves. As the creator of Chicago Street Style, the blog she started in the summer of 2010 as a graduate student at DePaul University's School of Public Service, Creyer scours the avenues to document Chicago's most fashionable denizens—and she knows firsthand that there's no shortage of sartorial style here. "You go to galas, cocktail parties, house parties, fashion parties in Chicago [and] see the same style that you see in New York," Creyer says, Made in Chicago: "but it's just not as visible because it's not as "Creatures of the much a sidewalk culture." She attributes Wind is my favorite her fashion sense to her Greenwich Village label. To see designers from upbringing (she moved to Chicago five Chicago being years ago), and from September 5 to 12 taken seriously as she'll be documenting Mercedes-Benz innovators in Fashion Week. This will mark her sixth fashion is New York Fashion Week experience, and incredible." she's excited not only for herself, but also for Good vibrations: "You'll only ever the city she now calls home. "People [in see blog posts other cities] know me as the Chicago phofrom me that are tographer," she says. "Other international, celebrating really well-respected street style photograsomebody." phers are recognizing now that Chicago is a fashion city." Back home, Creyer (who cites Oak and Rush Streets; North, Milwaukee, and Damen Avenues; and State Street between Adams and Lake Streets as her three favorite intersections to capture street style) is now also recognized. She recalls meeting fellow blogger Stephen Young after his ensemble caught her eye and she asked to photograph him. "When I stopped him he said, 'You're Amy from Chicago Street Style! I've been waiting two years for you to find me,'" she recalls. "I was like, 'See, if you have THE PHOTOGRAPHER BEHIND CHICAGO STREET STYLE ZOOMS great style it's just a matter of time.'" IN ON THE WINDY CITY'S MOST STYLISH SET. BY MEG MATHIS Although her schedule as an advertising copywriter prevents her from posting multiple times a day like she did when she launched her blog three years ago, lthough she's tucked away in the back corner of a Magnificent Mile tea Creyer's mission of celebrating Chicago's community has proven a winshop, Amy Creyer—clad in a gray printed Prabal Gurung T-shirt and win. "Stopping someone for a photograph is such a positive experience," a black asymmetrical Junya Watanabe skirt—is far too chic to blend in she says. "It just lightens their spirit to have some stranger with a camera with the crowd. When asked to describe her style, Creyer takes a sip of bubble come up and say, 'You look great and clearly put a lot of thought in your tea and finally comes up with "athletic and architectural." Says the 27-year-old outfit. I would love to share you with the world.'" chicagostreetstyle.com MA INSIGHT A 62 PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILLY ROOD Amy Creyer MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM 062_MA_SP_TP_Amy_Sept13.indd 62 8/7/13 1:14 PM
