The answers—a chance encounter, an awkward first-date-turned-marriage—are always intriguing. With Michigan Avenue, it's no different. In March of 2008, six months before our launch celebration, I sat at my desk to get to work on our first issue. With the evolving media landscape, embarking on a luxury lifestyle publication rooted in traditional media was a tall order. Little did we know we were about to enter the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Rumors abounded of our imminent demise before our inaugural issue even hit stands. Needless to say, circumstances were not in our favor. Fast-forward to September 2008, when our first issue, featuring cover star Cindy Crawford, was released, setting a new standard for regional media properties in Chicago. Congratulations poured in, and the audience quickly clicked with our vision of celebrating the city's most sophisticated cross-sections. Since our launch party at The James hotel, we haven't looked back, always seeking to attract and engage today's headlining movie stars, athletes, and political players in Follow me on Twitter print, online, and in life—so much so @danuslan and on Facebook at that Governor Pat Quinn proclaimed August 8 "Michigan Avenue Magazine Day." (Check out our Facebook page to view the proclamation.) We've toasted Mayor Rahm Emanuel at Mesirow Financial; honored Harrison Ford at Chicago Cut Steakhouse; rubbed shoulders with Robert Redford at the River East Art Center; and enjoyed a memorable, intimate performance by superstar Jennifer Hudson—twice! I couldn't be prouder of our consistent growth in readership, ad sales, online vitality, and brand recognition. For this, I thank you—our readers, partners, and advertisers—who believed in our vision when it was just that: an idea. I can't help but feel our city's collective excitement for what has come, and what is to come ahead. Really, we're only just getting started. DAN USLAN 8/7/13 1:04 PM
