The promotional campaign worked—here we are, mention- ing it more than a decade later—but it is clear Holmes belongs in a more, shall we say, dignified venue. He's found one now. A soaring vocalist who can thrill audiences num- bering a dozen or 12,000, Holmes is the resident headliner at the new Cabaret Jazz theater at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts. He is to per- form on the first Friday and Saturday of each month at the 258-seat space (with a view of Symphony Park) at the city's new cultural hub. (The Smith Center, which opened to much fanfare in March, also encom- passes 2,050-seat main performance theater, Reynolds Hall, and the flexible-capacity Troesh Studio Theater.) "The first time I got to tour it, I thought, This is as beautiful as any theater I've been in," Holmes says. "Acoustically, it's going to be at that level, too." Since that initial walk-through, Holmes has attended one of two VIP per- formances at Cabaret Jazz by Broadway performer Linda Eder (aka "The Voice"). Holmes and Eder spoke after her standing-room-only appearance. "She told me, 'I would be happy if I never had to play another room,'" Holmes says. "She loved it. It was a really cool show, a lot of table-hopping going on, very informal. I think I would really regret if I weren't performing here. The city has nothing else like it." A master performer in the mold of his late friend Sammy Davis Jr., who was one of his most influential mentors, Holmes should thrive in such close quarters.
