Superlatives power strip think green MGM RESORTS EXECUTIVE CHRIS BROPHY IS CELEBRATING EARTH DAY WITH AN IMPRESSIVE LIST OF ENERGY- SAVING INITIATIVES. by lisa arcella photography by leila navidi F or Chris Brophy, every day is Earth Day. As vice pres- ident for corporate sustainability at MGM Resorts International, he thinks 24/7 about how he can make a $6 billion company greener than it already is. Even his office is recycled: Brophy and his team work in what used to be the project managers' offices for CityCenter. The sparsely furnished room features a wall sculpture made of—what else—reprocessed magazines, cardboard, and palm fibers. Brophy, a Connecticut-born father of five, will celebrate Earth Day (April 22) at Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, where MGM is sponsoring a green fair called Party for the Planet. He is also leading a company-wide effort to launch the MGM Resorts Green Advantage program for employees, and Brophy's team helped form a $1 million partnership with Cirque du Soleil and One Drop—an international nonprofit organization focused on water as a global resource. Environmental awareness has long been part of the cor- porate culture at MGM, Brophy says. CityCenter, one of the largest LEED-certified projects in the world, has received six gold certifications. And since he joined the company in 2007, each of MGM's 15 properties in Las Vegas has had a green team that determines how the com- pany can work toward saving resources. continued on page 58 vegasmagazine.com 57 people, culture, style
