BY MELISSA HELLSTERN W hen the Taste of Chicago debuted in July 1980, Eli's Cheesecake was there. In the years since, the company has sold more than three million slices of Chicago's most famous dessert at the Taste alone. This year marks the 33rd year for the Chicago-style cheesecake. "My dad was in the restaurant business my entire life, and almost all our family celebrations were at the restaurants," recalls Marc Schulman, Eli's son and the president of Eli's Cheesecake Co. "At a very young age, I remember my Aunt Bertha serving me cheesecake at Eli's Ogden Huddle on Chicago's West Side. Later, there was cheesecake at the deli counter at Eli's Stage Delicatessen on East Oak Street, next to the Esquire Theatre." It was Eli Schulman's dedication to quality and his larger-than-life personality that led him to open Eli's The Place for Steak in 1966.
