F ront Runners Babe Ruth, Al Simmons, and Lou Gehrig were among the baseball legends at the first Major League All-Star Game. field of dreams ON JULY 6, 1933, CHICAGO HIT A GRAND SLAM WITH THE FIRST ALL-STAR GAME. T he summer air was charged with anticipation as baseball legends Lou Gehrig, Al Simmons, and Babe "The Great Bambino" Ruth sauntered onto the field at Comiskey Park on July 6, 1933. Onlookers knew that something spectacular was about to take place at this contest, which was three years in the making and was billed as a one-time "Game of the Century." Conceived by Chicago Tribune sports editor Arch Ward (who had been entrusted by Mayor Edward J. Kelly to create a sporting event to complement the city's progressive image during the 1933 World's Fair, "A Century of Progress"), this unique contest pitted American League heavy hitters like Gehrig, Charlie Gehringer, and Jimmie Foxx against the National League's most fearsome players, including Gabby Hartnett, Jimmie Wilson, and Lon Warneke. A crowd of more than 47,000 squeezed into the White Sox stadium to witness the meeting of these ultimate dream teams, and with Ruth slugging for the American League and Bill Hallahan on the mound for the National League, tensions were high. With his trademark swing, Ruth struck the first home run, and the American League ultimately emerged victorious 4-2 in what became the first Major League All-Star Game, a beloved summer tradition that the Windy City helped hit out of the ballpark.
