It was 1999, and having just returned from a year in rainy Ireland, I basked in the heat and energy of the city as if I had never seen the sun. My daily commute was a dream, Rollerblading each morning two miles down the lakeshore path to give private tennis lessons and sharpen up my clay-court game at the Diversey Tennis Center. While a career in the publishing world was beckoning, for that summer of '99, I was content to glide through my mornings and soak up the wonders of my new hometown. And seriously—how wonderful is it to be in Chicago in the summer? To me, there's no place with more magic or more varied charms. Along the lakefront, helmeted cyclists, joggers, sunbathers, and volleyball players create a parade Follow me on Twitter of fit bodies comparable to a @JP_Anderson and at boardwalk in any exotic beach michiganavemag.com. town. All through the Gold Coast, packed patios make for the best people-watching in the city. And at venues like Jay Pritzker Pavilion and Ravinia, open-air concerts fill the air with music. The season may be short, but how sweet it is. Inspired by that summer buzz and energy, this issue celebrates some of the dynamic Chicagoans who make the season so incredible. Race to Mackinac sailor Peter Thornton, cultural commissioner Michelle Boone, jazz great Ramsey Lewis—each has a fascinating story to tell this summer and plays an integral part in creating that magic. Even after 14 years in the city, nothing has changed when it comes to the wonder I feel at being a Chicagoan during this time of year. I may not be skating to work anymore, but I still happily glide through the summer days in this greatest of all cities. Enjoy—and I'll see you on the lakefront!
