In 2011, the organization received 53 percent of its total food drive donations in November and December alone. "As Americans, we tend to think about the hunger issue as we're planning our [holiday] feasts," Maehr says. As a result, people want to get engaged and volunteer. "It's crazy, and emotional this wonderful, time of year," she adds, recalling an anecdote from a few years back: While opening her mail at the end of a long day, Maehr ripped open a particu- larly heavy envelope. Currently, the GCFD is about halfway toward fulfilling the goals set out in its five-year strategic plan, which was established in 2010, including increasing the proportion of healthy, whole-grain food and fresh produce it distributes; investing in technology that will help achieve that mission; and establishing new forms of measurement to reflect the organization's impact. But, Maehr notes, "the biggest bat- tle we have to fight is reminding people that we have hungry neighbors in our communities"; that is, mobilizing the public to end hunger in Chicago. To tackle this, the GCFD must find a way to har- ness the goodwill of the holidays and carry it throughout the year. It's a lofty goal, but one that the 34-year-old organization is determined to achieve. "As Daniel Burnham would say," Maehr says, paraphras- ing the legendary architect, "'Make no small plans.'"
