PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE STARR (SUTTON); MATT FERGUSON PHOTOGRAPHY LTD. (TRICOCI); DAN REST (BOLLINGER); UNION LEAGUE CLUB OF CHICAGO (BERKUS) FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF With the ever-charming Nate Berkus after our on-stage discussion of his new book, The Things That Matter, at a Union League Club Luncheon in his honor. As a kid, I never imagined the calendar moving beyond the year 2000. I'd be 27 by then—practi- ABOVE: Enjoying Bunky Cushing's handbag luncheon with Cheryl Bollinger, Kelly Wesley, and Cindy Burns. The idea of being older than that was plain unfathomable. However, I've since come to terms with being 27; I've even embraced my 40s, which I happily entered a few months ago. That said, I still find it hard to believe that we're wrapping up 2012 and about to head into 2013. Weren't we supposed to be flying cars down Michigan Avenue by now and relying on Jetsons-esque robot maids to clean our condos? We may not be time-traveling just yet, but Chicago has proven itself to be a city that looks boldly to the future, whether it's Mayor Rahm Emanuel's plan to make us the nation's Wi-Fi hub with his recently announced Broadband Challenge or the Greater Chicago Food Depository's ambitious goal to end local hunger by 2015. We're Chicagoans, and it's what we do. We look to make this amazing city better—for everyone. One person that I'm particularly proud to call a fellow Chicagoan is our cover star Jennifer Hudson. I had the privilege of sitting in on her interview with Kelly Rowland, and aside from being entertained by their laughter-filled conversation, I was @JP_Anderson and at michiganavemag.com. Follow me on Twitter amazed at how passionate Jennifer is about the Julian D. King Gift Foundation, created in honor of her nephew. She has turned a personal tragedy into a real blessing for other families in Chicago, and for that she is an inspiration to all of us. I bid a fond farewell to 2012, and a rowdy Chicago welcome to lucky '13. Happy New Year one and all! With Jennifer Sutton at the Chicago House Speaker Series luncheon featuring designer Kenneth Cole. J.P. ANDERSON P.S. We'd like to dedicate this issue to photographer Steve Starr, who passed away in November. His warm personality and megawatt smile are greatly missed. 24 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM
