BY LISA SKOLNIK T he high-end enclave thanks known as the Cathedral District emerged in the late noughties to three thoughtfully designed, spectacularly successful luxury high- rises—The Fordham (25 East Superior Street), The Pinnacle (21 East Huron Street), and 55 East Erie Street. It runs from Michigan Avenue to State Street east to west, and Chicago and Ontario Avenues north to south, per Pinnacle and Fordham developer Christopher Carley. He christened the area in deference to its stately neighbors, Holy Name and St. James Cathedrals. At a scant two blocks in either direction, the district sits smack in the middle of the city's offi- cial Near North Side; it's like a juicy maraschino cherry atop an already mouthwatering cake. And what's not to tempt, in real estate terms, when that cake is comprised of classy neighbors like Streeterville to the east, the Gold Coast to the north, and River North to the west and south? Ironically, the Cathedral District is carved out of the east side of River North, a stylish neighbor- hood that was totally dilapidated when developer Albert Friedman created it in the 1970s and was also "a scruffy no-man's land of empty lots, vacant buildings, and rundown old Victorian man- sions," says Carley.
