PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSH SCOTT MOST WANTED buck B don't pass this A COLLEGE FAVORITE GETS A REFRESHER COURSE ON FALL'S NATTIEST TREND. BY JUSTIN MIN oston's strong prep aesthetic has distin- guished itself so far that it has become its own genre of fashion. Whether you like to call them derbys, Gibsons, or bucks, this particu- lar style of shoe has been a staple in the closets of most men who've earned degrees here. This fall designers such as Louis Vuitton and Salvatore Ferragamo gave the buck an update by incorpo- rating metal accents at the heel and toe on buttery dark leather and fur uppers. Men's ready- to-wear studio and style director Kim Jones's sophomore outing for Louis Vuitton showed smartly tailored suits paired with bucks crafted in rabbit, calfskin, and rubber. The unexpected texture of the shoe's body paired with the futuris- tic shine of the stainless steel make the shoes a masculine standout. Ferragamo's Massimiliano Giornetti looked to the darker side of the English dandy as the inspiration for his steel-tipped shoe. Elegant wool and tweed clothing keep the collec- tion from being too flamboyant, and the knifelike detail on the heel and elongated toe add an appealingly sinister edge. While metal-plated footwear may be a bolder choice this fall, the clas- sic style and progressive combination of materials earn these menswear makers a master's in design.
