FROM THE EDITOR Dan Uslan and I making our public debut together at the fun "Windy City Live" anniversary party on July 11 It's only 84 miles from Ottawa, Illinois, to Michigan Avenue. But as a kid, growing up in that My July 17 welcome reception at Sunda, with host and fellow media guy Billy Dec LaSalle County town (population 18,699), Chicago seemed a universe away. As far as I was concerned, it was the biggest place in the world— Metropolis and Mecca rolled into one—and elementary school field trips to the Sears Tower (back then the tallest building in the world), the Shedd Aquarium, and the cavernous Museum of Science and Industry did nothing to dispel the idea. After 14 years in the city, Chicago may no longer seem as mysterious or larger-than-life to me, but it's still just as magical—from the powerful allure of Lake Michigan to the peerless skyline to our groundbreaking restaurant scene, world-class boutiques, and renowned cultural institutions. You know it, and I know it: This is the best city in the world. And that's why I'm thrilled to be the new editor-in-chief of Michigan Avenue, a magazine that celebrates the people and places that make this city so very extraordinary. Whether it's an homage to Oak Street through the eyes of Marilyn Miglin at @JP_Anderson and at michiganavemag.com. Follow me on Twitter ("The Empress of Oak Street," page 122), a profile of three anticipated new oenophile ABOVE: With Dan and the sweet-as-can-be Bethenny Frankel at our official Summer Cover Party on August 2 at Market LEFT: Catching up with longtime colleague Robin Hammond, director of marketing at Second City destinations ("Return of the Wine Bar," page 86), or a study of the mystique behind two of the city's top educational institutions ("School Ties," page 110), I think of every story we tell as a love letter to Chicago itself. If you can't already tell, I've fallen hard for this city of ours. It won my heart long ago, and I'm excited beyond words to share all of its incredible stories with you. Thanks for reading, and for welcoming me to Michigan Avenue. For this Ottawa boy, it's a dream come true. J.P. ANDERSON 32 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM
