Peacock, which first opened its doors on February 9, 1837, marked its own 175th anniver- sary by launching its fourth Chicagoland store at the Old Orchard Mall in Skokie. What began as Elijah Peacock's small watch and jewelry repair shop on Lake Street grew into a notable locale that sold quality silver and flatware; later it became the well-regarded purveyor of fine watches and jewelry that it is today. The store now carries a curated selection of jewelry by brands like Hearts on Fire, Kwiat, and Mikimoto and offers a wide selection of premier watch brands such as Patek Philippe, Rolex, Cartier, Chanel, Panerai, Hermès, TAG Heuer, Montblanc, and Corum. Throughout its history, C.D. Peacock has been interwoven with the pivotal events and influential people that pep- per Chicago's rich past—George Pullman and Mary Todd Lincoln are known to have been among the store's early customers. But perhaps the company's most notable moment in history came in 1871: In what was one of the few bright spots in the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire, when flames ravaged the majority of the city, C.D. Peacock's inven- tory, which was stored in a fireproof safe, emerged unscathed and intact. Talk about staying power! MA
