PHOTOGRAPHY BY RON GALELLA/WIREIMAGE F ront Runners hitting a high note EX-LOVERS DIANA ROSS AND BERRY GORDY CAME TOGETHER TO WATCH LARRY HOLMES BOB AND WEAVE HIS WAY TO VICTORY. BY LAUREN CUMMINS I 14 VEGASMAGAZINE.COM n the midst of her streak of smash hits, Diana Ross was all smiles ringside with mentor and former flame, the famed founder of Motown, Berry Gordy, at the Larry Holmes vs. Earnie Shavers fight on September 28, 1979. At the peak of Ross's solo career, and a decade after her reign in The Supremes, these two made history against the ropes at Caesars Palace, then the red-hot center of Vegas entertainment. Marvin Gaye set the tone for the historic match, leading off with the national anthem. In this epic fight, Holmes recovered from a seventh round knock- down to retain the WBC heavyweight title with a knockout in the 11th round—in all, Holmes defended his title a total of 16 times and is regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time. Though their scandalous affair wasn't confirmed until much later, Ross had a child with Gordy in 1971, which bonded the two together even through the hardest times in their careers. On that same 1979 Las Vegas trip, Ross recorded her Live from Las Vegas album at the Colosseum. Though Gordy was always a frequent Vegas visitor, he has recently been coming to town to support his son, Redfoo, and grandson, Sky Blu, as their chart-topping band, LMFAO, often performs on the Strip, and Redfoo deejays the monthly Party Rock night at Marquee.
