FROM THE PRESIDENT & PUBLISHER Nothing says spring like Opening Day at Wrigley Field with Anheuser-Busch's Sean Lennon. At the Ritz-Carlton Chicago with my good friend Izzy Idonije and Harry Belafonte, who were honored as "Men of Excellence" at the Common Ground Foundation Gala and Fundraiser Growing up with sailboat-themed wallpaper in my room as a kid was the first sign that boating was destined to be a part of my life. Around my eighth birthday, my grandfather picked me up in his green Buick and drove me down to the Jersey Shore where he docked the Advisor, a 50-foot motor yacht, which I captained in the summer during my teenage years. Fast forward to spring 1999. Having just landed in Chicago with my wife, Sharon, I was fascinated by the enthusiastic sailing community here; I loved walking along Lake Michigan, awestruck by the colorful, billowing sails. That spring, a colleague invited me to join the annual procession of sailboats as they traveled from dry dock to their summer homes in the various yacht clubs lining the lakeshore. Ever since my first real sailing experience aboard Folie a Deux, I have wanted to be a @danuslan and on Facebook at facebook.com/danieluslan. Follow me on Twitter at ABOVE: A fun spring Sunday night at the Joffrey Ballet's 10th Anniversary Gala with my friends Tarrah Cooper, Sonya Jackson, and Jayna Cooke LEFT: Hosting Mayor Rahm Emanuel at Mesirow Financial for his cover celebration part of the real "mac daddy" of sailing races: the 104th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, presented by Veuve Clicquot. While I won't be sailing in the race, you can still join me for Michigan Avenue's Ashore Thing, the official Parade of Boats viewing party presented by BMO Harris Bank at the east end of Navy Pier on July 21, 10:30 AM–1:30 PM. We'll toast with Veuve Clicquot and enjoy a feast courtesy of Phil Stefani Signature Events. Supermodel and Chicago native Joanna Krupa and other celebrities will be on hand to enjoy a BCBG fashion show and marvel at the hundreds of boats at they get ready to start Chicago's most exciting sailing regatta. Check out our website at michiganavemag.com/ashorething for more information and to order lunch for the party. Bring your sunscreen, and see you this summer. Ahoy, mateys!
