FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHEIF With Scott Grigelevich and Dan Donahue of The Lenox Hotel at Party in the Park. With Herb Chambers at our Summer in the City party at Smith & Wollensky on Atlantic Wharf. ABOVE: Celebrating with Steve Brook, Shauna Brook, and Mark and Joyce Goldweitz at our Nantucket party at The Summer House. LEFT: Bill Belichick and Linda Holliday also attended our lawn party at The Summer House in 'Sconset. we decided to ask one of our columnists to delve into the male psyche and tease out what drives most Boston men to either adapt to or resist sartorial evolution. His conclusions in Parting Shot seem spot on. To wit, a few years ago we were on a photo shoot with a man we were profiling. He was handsome and winsome, but dressed in ink-stained khakis and a shirt that had worked hard with him for years. He refused to put on the shirt, designer jeans, and casual loafers we had brought with us for the shoot. I was puzzled. We'd chosen items that were stylish, yes, but still masculine— he'd really rather be photographed in stained clothes? But he said he couldn't bear if it someone he knew saw him in such a fashionable outfit. Since then, I've run into a few other masculine style quirks. While we were shooting this issue's fashion feature at the Boston Harbor Hotel, our very talented photographer Jim Wright spoke out strongly against an incredibly cool pair of shoes the stylist had put on Maiko, our male model. The soft, black laced shoes had hard plastic spikes, much like you'll see on many of Louboutin's or Valentino's women's shoes this fall. They were perfectly à la mode. But Jim was having none of it. It's OK to have spikes on women's shoes, he said, but not men's. He almost shivered in revulsion—too '80s. Follow me on Facebook at For women, it's another story. Facebook.com/boston-common and on We tend to embrace fashion in its bostoncommon-magazine.com. entirety, even knowing it might not always fit our taste or suit our shape (and even if we also abhor the '80s). But we admire other women who can pull it off. And we get excited about new trends—like the sexy, 1940s-inspired silhouettes such as a nipped-atthe-waist fur-trimmed jacket from Carolina Herrera in this issue. We want to touch it and put it on. Thankfully, though, some men, like our Parting Shot columnist, Mr. Cook, and our very own publisher, Glen Kelley, are willing to take risks and keep pushing Boston's men forward. ZZ Top might have said it best—"Every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp-dressed man"— even if they said it in the '80s.
