BY MADELINE SKAGGS AND MEG MATHIS T 8 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM he streets of Chicago may be a wonderland of twinkling lights and festive decorations, but the ultimate holi- day experience awaits inside the Goodman Theatre. Since opening night on November 24, 1978, the storied theater's take on A Christmas Carol has enchanted more than one million Chicagoans, who have eagerly watched Ebenezer Scrooge's transformation from greedy to good. The Goodman's interpretation of the Dickens classic has showcased a variety of local legends; the original production starred stage vet William J. Norris as the miserly Scrooge (a role Norris would play for 12 seasons) and godfather of improv Del Close as the Ghost of Christmas Present. Throughout 35 seasons, the yuletide tale of hope has featured 30 Tiny Tims and six different directors, including returning director Steve Scott, who has overseen more than 150 productions at the Goodman. Larry Yando—loved and feared for his menacing performance as Scar in the national tour of The Lion King— returns for his fifth turn as Scrooge, a role that has captivated past theatergoers and is sure to fill audiences with holiday cheer this season and for many more to come. A Christmas Carol runs November 17 through December 29. Tickets are $25 to $82. 170 N. Dearborn St., 312-443-3800; goodmantheatre.org MA
