The holidays sneak up on me every year. Celebrating Chicago native, NBA champ, Olympic gold medalist, and now New York Times best-selling author Dwyane Wade at Rockit for the launch of his book A Father First: How My Life Became Bigger Than Basketball. No sooner have I stowed my white pants, it seems, than the leaves have fallen, the temperature has plummeted, and Michigan Avenue is festooned with decorations. Not that I'm complaining. One of the things that makes Chicago a world-class city is the way we embrace the holidays, a time when even the cold and the snow seem designed to help set the perfect stage for a season of gift-giving and festive traditions. In this month's issue, we pay homage to one of my personal favorite Chicago holiday traditions: the Goodman Theatre's A Christmas Carol, which celebrates its 35th annual production this year. No matter how many times I see it, it's just as magical—and just as effective in giving me a rush of seasonal spirit. TOP: At No Reservations Giving with Windy City Habitat for Humanity executive director Jennifer Parks. LEFT: With publisher Dan Uslan at the Evergreen Invitational. If A Christmas Carol doesn't put you in the holiday mood, wait till you see our gift guide, a lavish 16-page spread with 99 sumptuous items ranging from jewelry to gourmet goods to accessories for the most discriminating traveler. (Santa, if you're reading this, I'd love to find those Lester Lampert white-gold cuff links under the tree this year.) at @JP_Anderson and at michiganavemag.com. Follow me on Twitter And our biggest gift to you this month? A fascinating, exclusive interview with knockout cover star and proud University of Michigan grad Lucy Liu. With Ally McBeal, Charlie's Angels, her new series Elementary, and this month's The Man with the Iron Fists, Lucy has proven to be one of the most versatile actresses working today, and we're thrilled to have her grace our cover. Enjoy the issue—and happy holidays! J.P. ANDERSON 20 MICHIGANAVEMAG.COM
