& CULTURE SOC I ET Y "White Noise" by Austin neon artist Evan Voyles was a highlight of the POP Austin International Art Show in 2015. The event returns to Fair Market in November. POP LIFE Steve and Lana Carlson are choosy: Steve with words for how to describe the POP Austin International Art Show, and Lana with the art she curates for it each year. Rightfully so, as the visionary event the Austin couple founded in 2014 is unlike anything else. Lana, a Sorbonne- trained art fair curator, sought a format that better embraced contemporary art, with its out-of-the-box quirks and array of medium. Steve, who now serves as CEO, helped develop their pop-up museum style, which breaks down the boundaries of average media programming. is transcendental take on art galleries allows local and international artists to cohesively show their work however they intended, in a place that otherwise might not have been possible for them. "We want to bring in an outside injection of art that appeals to local collectors who would generally shop for art elsewhere," says Steve, who previously worked in music and event production. e innovative show is proof that Austin's ever-evolving visual arts scene has a bright future. Nov. 9-12, $150 VIP tickets include opening night reception, Fair Market, 1100 E. Fifth St., popaustin.com –Hannah Morrow
