Cabaret on Display nevada state museum guest curator aran feder stages the very first public exhibit of costumes from les folies bergÈre' s 50-year run. by tess eyrich PhotograPhy courtesy of Las Vegas News Bureau You don't learn this in finishing school! Folies showgirls were nothing if not well-balanced, as evidenced by this 1970s performance. What can we expect to see at the Las Vegas Convention Center's new Folies Bergère exhibit? A diverse range of pieces. When we talk about cabaret costumes, usually the first things that come to people's minds are our famous showgirl outfits with the feather headdresses and bejeweled bras, but another large component is character costumes. Typically these costumes still have quite a bit of sex appeal, but they were themed. Any personal favorites? One of the character costumes I've included is a skimpier version of something that Marie Antoinette might've worn back in the day—it dates back to 1980. I've also included a number of rare boots that were used in the late 1960s and early '70s. Pieces produced prior to 1975 are a lot more rare than ones made after 1975 because they were designed in Paris by a man named Michel Gyarmathy, then shipped over for us to use in Vegas. What do you hope people take away from the show? That the cabaret genre is entirely unique to itself, and it really hasn't changed much since it was first introduced in Europe in the late 1800s. The pendulum always seems to come back to feathers, fishnets, and rhinestones, right? Through January 2017. Las Vegas Convention Center, 702-892-0711; lvcva.com . 74  vegasmagazine.com STYLE EXHIBIT
