BY TESS EYRICH From Elvis Presley's hip- shaking rock 'n' roll in the 1950s to the explosive growth of electronic dance music (EDM) over the past decade, Las Vegas has long had a hand in transforming musical subcultures into main- stream phenomena. Need proof? Consider the largest EDM festival outside of Europe, Insomniac Events' Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC), which celebrates its 20th anniversary and fifth year in Vegas this June. Since relocating from Los Angeles to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2011, the high-octane fest has generated an astound- ing $1.3 billion in profits, drawn more than 1.7 million people here— including 405,000 in 2015 alone—and become an unlikely pillar of the local arts scene in the process. Part of its success stems from its inclusiveness; much like Vegas itself, EDC offers something for everyone, even if you're not necessarily there for the music. You can brake for Day-Glo tattoos at a pop-up paint bar or accessorize your ensemble—or lack thereof—at a bracelet- making station. Unleash your inner child in a VIP ball pit (yes, that's a thing) or flex your adult muscles by getting legally married in an Insomniac- branded chapel. As always, we don't care why you came—we're just happy you're here. June 17–19. Las Vegas Motor Speedway; electric . 8 VEGASMAGAZINE.COM FULL FRONTAL
