EvEryonE lovEs discovEring what's cool , don't you t h i n k? T he hot new rest au rateu r, popular professor, up-and-coming interior designer, or Midas-touch ent repreneur—it never gets old. The sci- ence behind what catches on as a trend is fascinating, frustrating, but irresistible good fun. In Boston, there are a select few who continue to call in cool again and again. They are art consultants, night- life czars, movie scouts, and start-up kings who have the eye to spot raw talent and the gut to feel what's real. Paul English, founder of Kayak.com and Blade.net (among a slew of ot her busi nesses), heads ou r l i neup a s t he perennial spot-on idea guy, now focusing his attention on grooming the next magnates. There's also Elizabeth Erdreich White, who roams the globe in search of mas- ter artists; youngblood bloggers Kat and Ashley Hess, chasing fashion dreams; and Holly wood movie loca- tion scout Mark Fitzgerald, securing just the right South E nd a lley for a get away scene. Some consider t hem- selves risk-takers. Others call themselves lucky. We call them cool-hunters. T he recent season at Boston Common reaff ir med for me how the cool factor continues to saturate our great city. Dolce & Gabbana seduced Bostonians with sump- t uous red a nd a nima l-pr int text ures at it s bout ique opening. Dorfman enticed customers with a spanking- new collection from the world's best emerging jewelry designers. At our own holiday gift gala at the Mandarin Oriental, I overheard more than a few people saying, "That's what I will buy for her… him… me!" At Lord & Taylor, I emceed a fa sh ion show t hat u nvei led t he i nsa nely ch ic a nd prag mat ic 42 4 Fi f t h col lect ion, f it for ever y season. A nd w it h t hat , I w ish you a lovely, super-cool spring. 1. Rowing I'm hoping to pick up where I left off in learning how to row on the Charles River this spring. It's a whole other world on the Boston water. 2. Matsu One of Newbury Street's coolest boutiques, Matsu, has hit the suburbs. Owner Dava Muramatsu stocks the shelves with bejeweled crowns, ethe- real sheaths, and intoxicating candles. 3. Tea Tasting I associate spring with a proper tea. Why? Who knows.
