Every day I walk down the Mag Mile to work. It's the most energizing commute I can imagine. Behind me, the John Hancock Center towers up into the blue; up ahead, the flying buttresses of the Tribune Tower and the cool, white glazed terra-cotta façade of the Wrigley Building come into view, along with the majestic Michigan Avenue bridge and the Chicago River. And all around, the air buzzes with the energy of a city at work and at play, from locals striding with purpose into office buildings to tourists rambling down the avenue taking in their surroundings, snapping pictures, and window-shopping at Follow me on Twitter the international boutiques ranging @JP_Anderson and at from Burberry to Bottega Veneta. michiganavemag.com. There's no place like it in the world, and there's no other city I'd rather call home—especially right now, when the Avenue is in full bloom with tulips from end to end. It's a safe bet that cover star David Schwimmer is as big a fan of Michigan Avenue as I am; his creative home, Lookingglass Theatre, has been headquartered in the historic Water Tower Pumping Station at Michigan and Pearson since 2003. The former Friends star just finished directing the Jason Bateman–produced NBC pilot Family Guide starring Parker Posey and J.K. Simmons, but these days he's back in Chicago to help wrap up Lookingglass's 25th season by directing Keith Huff's Big Lake Big City. Mark your calendars for June 19, opening night for that world-premiere stage production. Along with fellow Lookingglass ensemble member Mary Zimmerman's Jungle Book, it's one of the must-see shows of the summer—and it's one more reason that, when it comes to the world's great streets, there's no place like Michigan Avenue.
