DESIGN SPOTLIGHT The Wynn ballroom, decorated for the resort's Chinese New Year Gala. Sticky rice cake at Wynn Macau, a traditional Chinese New Year dish. Bountiful fish dishes are followed by e-fu noodles, included for their lingual similarity to the Mandarin word "luck." and prosperity make up the seasonal cuisine. Fish dishes are ubiquitous, as the Mandarin word sounds similar to "surplus." Golden oysters will be on this year's menu for the 1,500 to 2,000 casino guests invited to the banquet as well. Entire families attend together, with dinner served family style from a very specific menu. The bountiful fish dishes are followed by golden e-fu noodles, included for the lingual similarity to the Mandarin word for "luck." Parry says the character for luck is often seen at the party—or on the party guests themselves. "You'll also hear them say 'Gong hay fat choi,' which means 'Happy New Year' in Cantonese," she adds. Dessert includes an "eight-treasure soup," Mandarin oranges, and miniature pastries. From there, guests go on their own to create their own New Year celebrations, and see if the good fortune generated by the banquet carries over to other areas of the property. If repeat visits are any indication, then the planning and preparation Wynn 60 puts into its annual Chinese New Year's party is well worth the effort. "Everybody, year after year," says Parry, "says our party is the most elegant and the best." n WYNN 058-060_W_F_DESIGN_Winter13.indd 60 12/12/12 5:43 PM
