BY MATT KELEMEN s the second new moon after the winter solstice looms, Wynn Las Vegas begins a transformation. Banners greet guests with wishes of prosperity. Tangerine trees join the familiar foliage visible to guests, with small red envelopes dangling from the branches. "It's a décor element," explains Nicole Parry, executive director of special events for Wynn Las Vegas, of the latter. "A lot of party hosts also give out lucky money envelopes to their guests." Tradition is at the heart of Chinese New Year—2013 ushers in the Year of the Snake— which is observed with reverence and enthusiasm throughout Wynn Resorts. Wynn Las Vegas and Encore have become annual destinations for many travelers of Asian heritage who reunite with family and friends, or arrive with them in groups, for one of the biggest holiday celebrations in the world. The sight of ornate dragons that greet guests as they enter the property and in front of Hermès at the Encore Esplanade during the 15-day holiday observance in February are familiar ones for returning visitors. Gilded snake statues are also displayed in the Atrium as well as near the Baccarat Room in Encore, in which more banners that encourage good fortune can be found.
