BY VISHAKA ROBINSON I t seems that the British royal family are having something of a Vegas moment. First came Prince Harry's well-publicized summer dalliance at Wynn, and now one of Kate Middleton's favorite designers, Packham, has turned her sights on our glitzy corner of Nevada as the inspi- ration for her Spring/Summer collection, down to a modern take on the glamour-fused makeup and hair of the 1960s. Jenny Her imagination took this historical turn after a visit to Vegas and Cosmopolitan, which features vintage photos of the Rat Pack throughout its hallways. "Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin—they per- formed, partied, and womanized," Packham says. "It was the ultimate boys club. But a few women permeated; they didn't chase the pack, they ran with it. Women like Angie Dickinson, Shirley MacLaine, and Lauren Bacall [supposed coiner of the phrase 'Rat Pack']: They weren't just pretty faces—they were independent, outspoken, political, and spunky." These fearless women (even the Rat Pack wasn't immune: MacLaine mocked Martin for being "intimidated" by her) were firmly in Packham's mind as she set about creating a red-carpet-worthy collection laced with embroidered beads, sequins, and embellishments. Looks include a three- quarter-sleeved personal gown embellished cuffs woven with paillettes, and Packham's favorite: a full-length, bugle beaded dress with Swarovski- in a sunset orange, sent down the catwalk with vertiginous glitter-flecked Louboutins and heavy cut-gemstone earrings. In a modish revamp of the era's trademark flicked liner and set hair, 108 VEGASMAGAZINE.COM Angie Dickinson went from beauty queen to Rat Pack gal pal, carrying on a 10-year relationship with Frank Sinatra. A Spring/ Summer 2013 runway look from Jenny Packham the backstage team at her Spring/Summer show loos- ened everything up. Foregoing powdered perfection for dewy skin (courtesy of Laura Mercier Moisture Supreme Foundation), they added color with barely-there coral lips and peacock blue sweeps of liner. Hair was churned over into voluminous side parts (reminiscent of Bacall's immaculate blonde wave) and twisted over into a low side pony. Packham's famous fans may span from the halls of Buckingham Palace to the red carpets of Hollywood (both Angelina Jolie and Kate Winslet are staunch supporters), but we think this homegrown style will be a major player in Vegas's very own fêted hot spots this year. V Shirley MacLaine said of her flirtatious friendship with Dean Martin: "What do you call that, when you have an attraction below your station?"
