BY MARK ADAMS I Vegas show at Red Rock. t's no surprise that Jason Mraz began his career performing for coffee shop crowds—he's a singer-songwriter with a pure vocal talent and thoughtful lyricism. That's a combination that fits right in with the warm-and-fuzzy music fans who like their live music with a cup of joe. These days, the Grammy-winning artist has moved up from his humble beginnings to headline at venues such as Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa's outdoor amphitheater, where he'll be this month as part of his Tour is a Four Letter Word, um, tour. You've opened for some pretty impressive acts. Who taught you the most? I opened for the Rolling Stones one time in Vegas. You get the idea that the Stones are a bunch of have a good time. But despite the many cigarettes you see Keith Richards smoke, the band in general was really healthy. That had a profound effect on my life. I started to pay more attention to how I was treating myself between shows so that I too could someday hopefully grow up to be an old man and still be able to offer something. They continue to rock harder than anyone I've ever seen. Now that you're the headliner, tell us what you've got planned for your 62 VEGASMAGAZINE.COM I have a band that can play anything from the catalog—I've never had that luxury before. I'm not sure what we'll be playing by the time we get to Vegas, but nothing is off-limits. It's a joy, but it's also kind of a nightmare, because we only have two hours. So there will always be one or two requests that go unplayed, and I apologize for that. Your fans will forgive you. They seem to really connect to you and your music. Not knowing why keeps me diving in and trying again and again and again. I write from my own human experience, and it often comes from bailing myself out of darkness or out of confusion. If you have a heart, you can connect. You're a fairly active philanthropist. blues musicians who are just down to party and Why is giving back important to you? I've made too much. When I got started, and I had zero money, I had friends who would take me to dinner and take me to movies. Now that I can be someone who helps, I'm doing what I can to give others a rich quality of life. I'm not looking for admiration, I just gotta share the wealth, you know?
