NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE OCTOBER 2012 ...WITHOUT WHOM THIS ISSUE WOULD aaron rasmussen Brooklyn-based writer and globetrotter Aaron Rasmussen interviewed our Power Strip subject, Byron Georgiou. What impressed you most about Georgiou? It struck me that Byron seems to put as much time and energy into his family as he does the businesses he's involved with as an investor. And anyone who once performed in a band called the Ceiling Shakers is all right in my book. What was most notable about his company, Xtreme Green Products? It's interesting that this relatively small company in Las Vegas is making a huge impact, even in New York, where police may soon be using Xtreme Green's police mobility vehicles, called Sentinels, to patrol the city. cindy pearlman L as Vegan Cindy Pearlman, author of The Black Book of Hollywood Beauty Secrets and The Beauty Cookbook, wrote our story on the Stillpoint Center for Spiritual Development. She is a senior entertainment writer for The New York Times syndicate and the Chicago Sun-Times. How are you liking living in Las Vegas? I love life out West. As my husband, Ron, says, "When it comes to the heat, at least you don't have to shovel it." Did you enjoy your time at Stillpoint? That is what I really love about Vegas: all the hidden treasures. Talking to steve friess S those amazing women was inspiring and very calming, too. teve Friess, who wrote our Macau feature, studied the impact of Las Vegas on China during a recent one-year Knight-Wallace Fellowship at the University of Michigan and now covers technology for Politico. What fascinates you most about the Vegas-Macau relationship? The export of American culture beyond McDonald's. The arrival of Macau as a credible Vegas-like entity shows how far the very experience that is Las Vegas is exportable. A lot of Chinese tourists come to Las Vegas. Why do so few Americans go to Macau? There's nothing in Macau that Americans can't see or do without taking a 12-plus-hour flight. Did you gamble in Macau? When I lived in Vegas I would play on a blackjack machine I felt I was good at. In Macau, I was much too intimi- dated by the language and currency barrier. Baccarat there seemed like a blood sport. 28 VEGASMAGAZINE.COM christopher devargas Sin City native Christopher DeVargas photographed our "Portraits of Success" feature, as well as a Desert Patrol story on the NFL's Stevenson Sylvester. What was shooting the portraits feature like? We had a blast, and I loved watching the people who weren't used to being photo- graphed as they began to warm up to the camera and be more comfortable in front of the lens. If you turned the lens on yourself, what category of our feature would you be in? I'd like to say it would be Groundbreakers, or maybe a new category like Imaginators. You shot Stevenson Sylvester. Are you a football fan? I'm always rooting for hometown heroes.
