ROBERT KACHELRIESS BETSY F. PERRY MATT KELEMEN EMILY WILSON Robert Kachelriess has represented Las Vegas in Thrillist for the past three years. He has also worked as the managing editor for Vegas2LA magazine and is a news producer for KVVU Fox5 in Las Vegas. For this issue of Vegas, he wrote about goings-on and getting your drink on around town. Go-to cocktail spot: The Barrymore at the Royal Resort. I always have a hard time choosing between a Manhattan and an old-fashioned. The Barrymore cocktail solves that problem since it's like a combination of both, fueled with Gentleman Jack and flavored with orange marmalade. Insider Vegas venue tip: I love what they've done with T-Mobile Arena. It's the best large-scale venue in the country. If you're stuck for tickets, see if admission is available for Hyde Lounge. It's like watching the show from a nightclub in the back of the arena. The view is distant but face it, you were going to watch most of it on the big screens anyway. Over the course of her career, Betsy F. Perry has worked with Michael Bloomberg, Rupert Murdoch, Helen Gurley Brown, and Michael Milken. She started at Harper's Bazaar, has held senior positions at Cosmopolitan and Premiere, and has been on both sides of the camera as a Fox producer, movie critic, and Star Magazine gossip columnist. She wrote this issue's Style story on Escada's 2017 resort collection. Behind the story: When you sit home wearing sweats, it's great fun to think about all the pretty clothes you're writing about. I especially loved the names of colors— Mimosa yellow and Melrose pink—that the designer came up with. Winter must-have: Gorgeous over-the-knee suede boots. Best gift ever: My mother gave me an Hermès bag when I was younger, and two years ago, I had it all polished up and gave it to my daugh- ter. She loved it, too. Matt Kelemen has covered music, film, architecture, and design over the course of his career, and for the last decade, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which he writes about in this issue. Why 2017 will be a big year for the UFC: In the last 12 months, the UFC broke ground on a new training campus and headquarters, cemented the star power of Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey, and was acquired by William Morris Endeavor in a develop- ment that takes MMA to an entirely new level. Fighters will become more cel- ebrated in mainstream culture, and UFC's global expansion will accelerate. Fighters to look out for: Paige VanZant will likely stay in the spotlight during the next year, and unde- feated kickboxer Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson has what COO Lawrence Epstein describes as "one of the most unique styles in the sport." Watch out for Yair Rodriguez and Cody Garbrandt as well. Photographer Emily Wilson shot our spotlight on Katie O'Neill and Patina Décor. Her current clients include The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Black Mountain Institute, and Trinity Haven Development. She is currently working on a personal project on Nevada agriculture and the Las Vegas chefs who source ingredients from within the state. Why she loves working in Vegas: My family and I moved here from New York a few years ago because of the revitaliza- tion of Downtown. From day one, I started following the story of building renovations, small business, and personal profiles. I love telling stories of people and places by capturing genuine and candid moments while also finding subtle details in a scene that can help tell a bigger story. On her shoot for this issue: Katie was fun and so photogenic. The store has endless amounts of interesting compositions. 34  VEGASMAGAZINE.COM ...WITHOUT WHOM THIS ISSUE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE
