We are honored to showcase him as our cover star (page 78) for our annual men's issue. Writer Michael hurley takes us inside the compelling, sometimes startling, story of his rise and impending retire- ment. his natural-born talents, charisma, generosity, and passion for Boston are qualities that have served him—and the city—well. Passion for our city makes up the core of our mission at Boston Common. We tend to focus on folks who excel in their chosen paths, but we work hard to dig up and spotlight those movers and shakers who also give back and give a damn. sometimes that comes in the form of God-given gifts (as with jazz prodigy Grace Kelly, page 46) and the joy we derive from them. other times, it's the inspiration from someone with a special strain of courage—like business tycoon alex Wayman, who spends his off-hours rais- ing money to help cure kidney disease (page 52), or events planner Billy evers, who quit a high-profile job to embrace a different approach to life (page 93). these are our city's fighters and champions. We hope you get to know them on our pages and in real, 3-D living. as for me, i've enjoyed a grand time getting to know power couple Bill and Giuliana rancic, who will lend their support by hosting the UnMask Cancer gala on october 22 at the Mandarin oriental Boston alongside Jessica and sam slater ( above right). this is the third annual bash, which is presented by the herb Cham- bers Companies. i also recently had the pleasure of catching the atlantic White shark Conservancy research team in action, tracking and protect- ing sharks (and us!) along the new england coast, thanks to a wonderful private, eco-tourist boat charter service created by the Chatham Bars inn. and of course, an enormous highlight of the season will be toasting David ortiz at our cover party. Baseball caps off, Mr. ortiz. thank you for giving a damn. from left: I kicked off the party season celebrating "French Art de Vivre" at Roche Bobois with two lovely ladies, showroom manager Paula Pomponio and Neiman Marcus PR director Emmanuelle Accad; feeling very stylish in Versace's Fall '16 knitwear while toasting the Copley Place boutique opening with cohosts Jessica and Sam Slater. 26 bostoncommon-magazine.com lisa pierpont LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF
