With a neW book and a spate of retreats this fall, harvard's Lama migmar TseTen shoWs boston men hoW to breathe. by Mia Zarrella Men- ditation For most alpha males, the idea of meditating in lieu of, say, dominating the golf course or controlling the boardroom has little appeal. If so, it may only be because these hotshot guys have yet to meet Lama Migmar Tseten, the Buddhist Chaplain of Harvard University and founder of Cambridge's Sakya Institute for Buddhist Studies. Along with spearheading a variety of meditation retreats open to the public this fall, Lama Migmar has published a new book, Shri Chakrasamvara Body Mandala, a guide to spiritual empowerment aimed to help you achieve an enlightened, produc- tive state. Meditation, says Lama Migmar, fights stress—and wins. What are the benefits of meditation? "We become more present and more attuned to our bodies. It can help eliminate physical stress and tension and improve sleep. Meditation can also greatly increase our emotion regulation." How do we begin? "You can begin tonight! Sit cross-legged in a comfortable position and take a few minutes to follow your breath." Are there special benefits for men? "In Buddhist practice there is an emphasis on balancing [our] mascu- line and feminine energies. Meditation helps integrate these and correct imbalances. It calms our destructive emotions like anger and cultivates more mindfulness." Any advice for workaholics? "There is an old saying: 'If you have little time, meditate for 15 minutes a day. If you have no time, meditate for an hour a day.' Tibetan Buddhism is not only for ourselves [but] for all beings." 59 Church St., Ste. 3, 617- 256-3904; sakya.net . 104  bostoncommon-magazine.com Space relax
