Las Vegas was the halfway point on our pilgrim- ages to the beach, and we'd look for it along I-15 headed south; whoever spotted that little strip of neon lights first won. We always stayed well off the Strip in a drive-up motel, and we always went to glamorous Circus Circus. Fast forward a few decades: That "spotting" game is long obsolete since the city's perma-glow can be seen from space, and I'm raising a child who, around the age I was gawking at palm trees, has mastered daytime sequins and is a known regular at raw bars around town. Of course, every parent has these "When I was your age" moments that point to fast-moving times, but I'd say they're most pronounced in Las Vegas. After all, when I was stopping over as a child, I would have been among 8 or 9 million annual visitors; we're now surpassing 42 million each year. Some of my early memories would have been approximately the same time Las Vegas first put two department stores together in one mall (page 66), and there are now five walkable Louis Vuitton stores along Las Vegas Boulevard (a new Vuitton concept store opens in Palazzo in September). We've passed through the city's thematization and its Epcotification to being one of the world's most recogniz- able original brands. It might be hard for my child to eventually move away and downshift into a reality that's more like the rest of the world's, but until then, we're enjoying the ride. clockwise from above left: Artist Sush Machida and I celebrated his gorgeous Vegas Summer cover at our Art of the City party at The Ogden. Brian Moore, my husband, Reid Gardner, and Tony Staton joined me to toast the opening of Intrigue in Wynn Las Vegas. At a Capri-themed party hosted by Elaine Wynn and Pamela Fiori in Wynn to celebrate the 45th anniversary of jewelry brand Faraone Mennella, I had the thrill of hobnobbing with fashion icon Iris Apfel and HSN's incredible CEO, Mindy Grossman. 26  vegasmagazine.com LETTER From THE EDITor-IN-CHIEF
