Navy Pier is awash iN art as exPo ChiCago sets uP shoP for a fifth go-rouNd. By Thomas Connors Sure, Art Basel Miami has the sun and sand that people crave once the temperature dips, but before the first snowflake falls, those in the know make the Windy City their destination of choice. It's no wonder: Now in its fifth year, Expo Chicago is one serious showcase—a not-to-be- missed barometer of current art practice and market trends, with 145 galleries from 23 countries transforming Navy Pier into a bazaar of the bold and the beautiful. In addition to present- ing established dealers and scene-shaping newcomers, Expo excels in creating an immersive experience through such components as In/Situ, an independently curated installa- tion of large-scale work, and Expo Video, which takes place in a constellation of screening stations designed by Chicago's award-winning Studio Gang Architects. The energy of the event will even spill over into the streets in a series of inventively imagined billboards. Under the leadership of President/Director Tony Karman, Expo has been instrumental in solidifying Chicago's identity as a player in the international art world. Yet for all its global glamour, this annual spectacle remains, suggests Karman, much like our city's reputation: "Intellectual, creative, provocative, diverse, and, as Nelson Algren wrote, 'never a lovely so real.'"
