Chances are she also indulged in a bit of homework: Lloyd is the president and creative director of Kate Spade New York, the eternally joyful lifestyle brand perhaps best known for its highly coveted, often brightly colored handbags, which opened its second Las Vegas boutique in mid- March at the Forum Shops at Caesars. "Vegas just responds really well to all the things we do. " "The Vegas market seems to love us; the customer just responds really well to all the things we do," Lloyd says, not- ing the success of the Kate Spade location at Fashion Show mall bears this out. "This store will give us the opportunity to amp up the glitter, amp up the color just a bit more. Many of the things we do are about exploring freedom of color and a sense of whimsy, and those are things that seem to marry well with Vegas." Indeed, even the most cursory glance at pieces from the Kate Spade Spring/Summer collection— such as the Solarium bib necklace, with its bold gemstones in blue and green, or the whimsy-driven Tiki Bar cock- tail clutch, its clasp a tiny pineapple—inspires thoughts of festive experiences. "We do love a bit of sparkle here," Lloyd notes with a smile. The Forum Shops boutique plays into this idea quite literally from top to bottom: Lloyd says the chandelier dominating the 2,186-square-foot space was custom-designed for this location, while the product selection likewise is infused with Vegas-friendly glamour. A new cosmetics collection with items exclusive to Vegas also puts an emphasis on color and sparkle, though at an accessible price point that will allow anyone who walks through the door to "enjoy a little takeaway." Throughout 2012, Lloyd is also exploring an initiative she's deemed "the year of pattern," with each month introducing a new print to the col- lection. Over the summer, this means a transition from what Lloyd calls "a bold, bright paisley" to a watercolor floral evocative of Paris: "deeper tones of blues and greens and beautiful cobalt colorways." Finally, August Colorful patterns and a sense of whimsy permeate the Forum Shops space. Interior of the new Kate Spade New York boutique at the Forum Shops. "August is a bit of a transitional month for us," Lloyd says, noting that the fall months will bring more geometric themes, from polka dots—"big dots, small dots," she says—to kaleidoscope prints in jewel tones. "There's always something new going on." Might Las Vegas inspire any future collections? "It already has, I think, in the sparkle of the clutch or the colorful nature of one of our bags," Lloyd says. And there's little doubt she'll return to Vegas, for research or otherwise, as the conversation veers toward what table you might find her at in the casino: Lloyd favors roulette, but her ears perk up when I men- tion craps is the game to learn. "I would love to play craps—the people at those tables always seem so animated," she says. After some discussion of the importance of a quiet table and an instructive dealer, it's obvious Lloyd is making mental notes for a future trip. And if not? She'll always have the Paris.
